About the Rotary Club of Palatine
The Rotary Club of Palatine was founded over 50 years ago to support the people of the Village of Palatine and to promote international understanding and friendship. We have supported many local projects over the years, including the Firefighter's Memorial, the Wood Street Gazebo, the accessible playground at the Salt Creek Park district, and many others. We support a broad spectrum of worthy local charities that aid those in need in Palatine and surrounding communities.
Most recently we have been producing the Palatine Oktoberfest event in downtown Palatine. This event is the primary fundraiser for the club. But it is more than that. It is an event that brings together people from the village and surrounding communities, of all ages and backgrounds. It's a family-friendly event (Family day is Sunday). Last year we raised funds allowing us to contribute $40,000 to local charities.
We recently formed a 501(c)3 organization - The Palatine Rotary Foundation. It is through this foundation that we collect Oktoberfest revenues and make contributions to local charities.
International projects include clean water and soy milk projects in Guatemala, ShelterBox emergency rescue systems for wherever they're required, and reading and school support in Africa and India. We are a part of Rotary International, which has for decades been involved in the eradication of Polio worldwide. While Polio was eradicated in the United States and Western Europe in the 1950s, it is still endemic in several nations. Our hope is that by eradicating it world-wide, this crippling disease will join Smallpox as a blight that no longer threatens people anywhere.
We recently established a Rotaract chapter, the Rotary club designed for under-30 members.
